First responders were called at around 3:15 p.m. on Sept. 25 to the Edgewood Park Apartment complex on Edgewood Road, when a neighbor reported a fire inside one of the units.
According to the Maryland Fire Marshal, crews from the Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company and Aberdeen Proving Grounds FD/EMS, were able to quickly knock down the fire, which was reported in a bedroom where the child was playing with a lighter.
It is believed that the owner of the home found the fire and attempted to put it out herself, before another resident called 911, and the small fire was then completely extinguished by firefighters.
The owner of the apartment was treated at the scene by paramedics for smoke inhalation, but refused EMS transport to thee hospital.
It was later determined that a 4-year-old was playing with a lighter, leading to the incident. No other injuries were reported.
Investigators say the blaze caused an estimated $25,000 in damage, and the family is being assisted by the Harford County Disaster Assistance.
No other units in the building suffered damage and no residents were displaced.
